I feel like only defining LGBT experience through the in or out binary is really limiting. I know being out and being able to live and be reongnized as who you are is important there’s no doubt but Black LGBT people have been living and subverting that boundary for generations. Coming out is powerful and brave and incredible but that’s not the only other towards self actualization. I’m not trying to shit on the post but I just want to say coming out formally doesn’t have to be apart of your journey(and people definitely say that, especially to poc).

You aren’t living a lie if you don’t come out to others but you should make peace with yourself. Do things to fulfill yourself and your identity and if coming out to your parents isn’t one of them, that’s okay. You aren’t settling you aren’t being inauthentic.

We don’t have to be out to demand that Black heterosexual people stop the homophobia and transphobia. Coming out won’t solve those issues and it’s really bad to say “ coming out is a must” with little regard to how homophobia and transphobic shape our lives. Let’s work on creating spaces to be to be out, resources for people who decide to live their truths so they don’t have to do it on the streets.
